Our Cross-Country Adventure, Day 35

Day 35 of our cross-country adventure was all driving and not very interesting to see. We were on a major highway all the way and we decided to change it up the next day. We spent the night in Oxford, NC.

We left the hotel and headed towards the coast of Virginia. We planned to take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and end up in Ocean City, Maryland. It is a place that Ronnie has always wanted to visit so we decided that now was the time.

We traveled on smaller roads, and we started to see field after field of cotton.

There were also balls of cotton all along the roadway. I started taking photos of the cotton fields in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

We stopped to supercharge in Halifax, North Carolina and the superchargers were right next to a store, “Oasis at Lakewood.”

This store was very different. It had displays of wild animals that were on loan from the Dandridge Museum in Rocky Mount, NC.

We crossed the border into Virginia in Emporia.

In Suffolk – Holland, Virginia, we saw cotton packed into round and rectangular bales. I had seen hay done this way but never cotton. It was neat!

In Portsmouth, Virginia, we passed a dry dock owned by Colonna’s Shipyard.

We arrived at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, paid our toll, and journeyed across the bridges and through the tunnels.

There were no overlooks open which disappointed us.

I did pull over at what I thought was an overlook, but it was a construction entrance. I took a photo of these people fishing near the bridge and then got back on the road.

We went through two tunnels and across several bridges.

I managed to get a few photos of the last bridge on the road before we disembarked on Fisherman’s Island.

We stopped on Fisherman’s Island, and I took some photos of the southbound bridge.

There were plenty of large ships at anchor waiting to enter the harbor.

The shoreline on Fisherman’s Island was beautiful.

We continued on our way to Ocean City, MD.

In Machipongo, Virginia, we saw this strange looking tree. It deserved a photo.

In Pocomoke City, we entered Maryland.

We noticed that the cloud formation was crazy near Newark, Delaware.

It seemed like a long drive, but we finally arrived in Ocean City, Maryland.

We stayed at the Hilton Garden Oceanfront hotel. We did not know when we booked it, but the hotel had undergone a 33-million-dollar renovation. I walked in to register, and I was floored with how beautiful it was.

It also happened to be one of the least expensive hotels that we stayed at on our trip. If the hotel blew us away, our room was just as big a surprise. It was beautiful.

Our room had a balcony that overlooks the ocean. We poured ourselves a glass of wine and watched the sunset. Although we were not facing the sunset. It still put some beautiful color into the eastern sky.

I did manage to capture a photo of the sunset from a window opposite our room.

We finished our night with dinner at a local restaurant. It is hard to find places to eat at this time of the year as many have closed for the season. We liked the hotel so much that we have decided to stay another night, so the adventure continues.

  1. We crossed the bridge – tunnel on October 1st on our way to the Outer Banks. Love the views from the bridge but Ed has to keep his eye on the road. The tunnels are his worry point with our rig so big. Oh well… It is better than years ago when we had to watch our old motorhome on the back of a tow truck go thru with it swaying on the hook. I hope they open the pier again someday. It was great to ‘fish from the pier’.
