EEL-01-HS001-018
A spotted moray eel, Gymnothorax moringa, photographed in Bonaire in the Netherland Antilles. This eel is found in the Western Atlantic from North Carolina and Bermuda to Brazil including the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and northern South American coastlines. It is a moderate-size moray with a pattern of distinct small, round, overlapping dark brownish to purplish-black spots on white or pale yellow background. The spotted moray is a solitary species that is abundant in shallow rocky and grassy areas and on coral reefs. It's bite is very dangerous. It is usually seen with its head protruding from a hole and the rest of its body concealed. It reaches a length of four feet and a weight of about five pounds.
