ART-08-46807
Photographed on the Axel Carlson Artificial Reef off New Jersey, USA. The tug Colleen was sunk on the Axel Carlson Artificial Reef on August 3, 1996. She was built in a New Orleans shipyard in 1956 and saw commercial tug and towing service on the Great Lakes and in New York harbor, hauling passengers and freight. She was taken out of service in 1991 due to heavy engine damage. The Colleen is 92 ft long with a 25 ft beam and gross tonnage of 150 tons. Her sinking was sponsored by Budweiser, Crown Beer Distributors and the Greater Point Pleasant Charter Boat Association. The new reef created a stir a few weeks after her sinking when small amounts of oil floated to the surface and caused some beach closing for a few days. The leaking stopped but not not before it caused some commotion along the beach communities.
